American English is the official language of the United States. Yet most people have trouble speaking it.
There are three main reasons why most people struggle to speak American English.
STEP 1: Understand How Language Works
First, people don’t know enough about how language works. For example, the word “the” has two meanings. One is “a” and the other is “the”. People don’t realize that the latter is a singular and the former is a plural. They also don’t realize that the singular and plural can only appear in the first and second person respectively.
STEP 2: Practice Speaking American English
Second, people don’t practice speaking it enough. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of speaking English like a native. This is especially true for non-native speakers.
STEP 3: Get Feedback
Finally, people don’t get feedback. A lot of people learn English by watching movies and TV shows. But movies and TV shows are generally made in America. This means that the English they use is American English. People aren’t getting feedback about how they’re speaking, and so they don’t improve.
This is the most common reason why people fail to speak American English correctly.
