How can you work with others to make the most of your work relationships?
The secret to success is being honest about your strengths and weaknesses, and working with other people to make your work successful.
As long as everyone is clear about the roles and responsibilities, you can all be successful together.
STEP 1: Be Honest With Yourself About What You Can Do
Before you even start talking to anyone else, you need to be honest with yourself about what you can do. Don’t worry about looking stupid, or making your coworkers uncomfortable. If you can’t do something, admit it.
When you know what you can’t do, you’ll be much more likely to ask for help.
STEP 2: Talk About Your Strengths, Not Your Weaknesses
Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths.
Most people are terrible at self-promotion and will often try to hide their weaknesses. Instead, they focus on their strengths and talk about how they’re amazing at what they do.
Admit your weaknesses, but talk about the things you’re good at instead.
STEP 3: Get Clear About Everyone’s Roles
Everyone has a role, and everyone should understand their own role. You might be the leader, but not the only one who does anything.
A good rule of thumb is that you should do at least half of the things you’re not good at.
STEP 4: Accept Help
If you don’t ask for help, you’ll never get it. When you can’t do something yourself, ask someone else to do it for you.
You might need to ask more than once before getting the help you want.
STEP 5: Learn From Others’ Mistakes
Mistakes are inevitable. You’re going to make mistakes.
Don’t let that discourage you from learning from others’ mistakes.
Take notes as you learn from others’ mistakes, and you’ll become an expert in your field.
STEP 6: Understand Other People’s Needs
Most people are more comfortable telling you what you should do than asking you what you can do.
It’s easier to ask you to do something than to tell you what you should do.
People usually want to feel useful, so if you can help them, they’ll do what you say.
STEP 7: Know Your Limitations
It’s easy to overestimate your abilities and underestimate your limitations.
You can easily become too confident and arrogant.
It’s important to be humble, and to know your own limitations.
STEP 8: Know the Risks You’re Taking
When you’re taking risks, you have to understand the risk involved.
If you don’t take risks, you’ll never grow.
If you’re not willing to take risks, you’ll never grow.
STEP 9: Work With The People You Trust
Work with the people you trust.
You can’t always be sure who you can trust.
You can’t always trust everyone, but you can always trust the people you trust.
