I’ve been getting a lot of questions about speaking American English in different situations.
As an American, I’ve come to realize that there are some things that I take for granted that most Americans don’t. That being said, I’ve decided to write a short article to help out others who want to improve their American English.
I’ll be using the Oxford American English Dictionary, the Cambridge Dictionaries Online, and Merriam-Webster.com as the main sources for the words.
STEP 1: Make sure you are comfortable in your environment
When you first begin learning American English, you might want to try and speak American English in an American environment first. If you’re used to speaking British English, you might find it difficult to adjust to the American accent.
To get around this, try and speak American English in your own environment. This way, you’ll be more familiar with the American accent.
STEP 2: Learn How to Speak American English Correctly
The last step in learning American English is to learn how to speak American English correctly.
It’s easy to forget how to pronounce American words correctly. If you haven’t paid attention while listening to American TV shows and movies, you might not remember how to say certain words correctly.
To help you remember, make a list of all the American English words you might forget. Once you learn the words, you’ll have an easier time pronouncing them correctly.
